The Princess in Separates as the Wales Family Attends the Commonwealth Games

The Princess of Wales was in separates for a trip to Glasgow with her family to watch the Commonwealth Games today.

The games are held every four years, and this year’s edition is being held in Glasgow, Scotland. The Telegraph notes, “It is the first time the children have appeared in public in Scotland, although they have traveled to the country privately, including to stay at Balmoral each summer.” 

The family’s first stop was at the netball semi-final game between Australia and Jamaica.

Netball is similar to basketball but with significant differences: there is no dribbling or running with the ball, and it is a non-contact sport.

The game was at The Hydro arena. This is the ninth day of competition at the Games, which wrap up tomorrow.

The family sat with members of Scotland’s netball team, the Scottish Thistles. In this image, you see Lexy Gillies next to the Prince of Wales.

Here is a post on social media from Ms. Gillies with a tongue-in-cheek reference to her “new pal, HRH.”  It was a fierce battle between the two teams. 

Jamaica won in an upset, beating Australia’s number one-ranked team.

As the family left the arena, they met volunteers and others who work behind the scenes to make the games successful. 

We learn more from this Press Association story. 

They met gold medal-winning para powerlifter Mark Swan and gymnast Reuben Ward on the concourse outside the venue.

Commonwealth Games mascot Finnie also high-fived George, Charlotte and Louis and fist-bumped Kate and William.

Mr. Swan is on the far right in this photo, and Mr. Ward is second from the right.

Below, you see the family chatting with the athletes. Rebecca English of The Daily Mail reported, “William asked the gold medal winner to explain how much he can lift in a way the youngsters could understand. Mark told them: ‘I can lift a grand piano or 19 corgi dogs.’ Charlotte and Louis gasped.”

Next on the agenda, cycling at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. 

Where they encountered some familiar faces. 

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh have attended several days of competition; the Duke is Vice-Patron of Commonwealth Sport. In this photo, you also see Sir Chris Hoy, six-time Olympic Gold medalist, seated in front of the Princess of Wales.

At the velodrome, they met Sir Chris Hoy and Dame Laura Kenny.

Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were given the honour of updating the medal tally board. 

The Princess of Wales disclosed that Dame Laura, the five-time Olympic champion cyclist, had tried to convince William and Catherine to “come and give it a go”, joking that she had replied: “Be careful what you wish for as they want to put us on a tandem bike in the velodrome.”

Gethin Jones, the Welsh TV presenter, asked Prince George, 13, Charlotte and Louis: “Would you like to see mum and dad on a tandem in the velodrome later?” George replied: “No.”

Prince William said: “We embarrass you enough as it is.”

The family also spent time with Welsh athletes, coaches, and their families at Wales House in Glasgow. That is the Welsh mascot on the right, Gwen the Dragon.

We learn details from this Daily Mail story by Rebecca English. 

The family of five received a warm welcome from the Welsh athletes and their families as they arrived at Wales House in the centre of Glasgow. They chatted with the athletes and their proud parents for over five minutes, asking about their achievements and how they prepared for the Games.

William and Catherine led their children over to speak to identical twin gymnasts Abigail and Emily Roper who won bronze medals within an hour of each other earlier in the week.Catherine asked: ‘And what are you doing? As Charlotte was asking, are you doing a lot of stretching and conditioning?’ They nodded and said they do a mix of both to ensure they’re strong and flexible.

The future Queen then turned to her youngest and said: ‘Louis, you’re perfecting your handstand at the moment.’

‘A bit,’ he said, with his arms crossed, ‘But Charlotte says I’m not very good.’

I believe the twins are seen in this photo with the Princess.

The Roper twins then asked if Charlotte can do one, and she said ‘yeah’.

When they asked George the same question, he and Catherine laughed as the young prince told them: ‘I’m rubbish at anything that involves flexibility.’

Charlotte then told them that her favourite part of gymnastics is the floor, with her mum adding: ‘Charlotte likes her dancing.’

Overhearing the conversation, William said: ‘She loves gymnastics and ballet.’

Having already learned that the young princess enjoys the sport, the Welsh gymnasts presented her with a Team Wales leotard that has been signed by the athletes.

Now for our look at what Kate wore.

She wore a new blazer that very much looks like the Ralph Lauren Collection Camden Cashmere Jacket in Dark Racing Green (past-season color, shown here in navy). The tailored double-breasted design is 100% cashmere, with a slim fit, peaked lapels, shoulder pads, darts at the waist, flap pockets, and a welted breast pocket.

The Princess’s top appears to be La Ligne, another US-based label. The Striped Featherweight Sweater Vest (now sold out) is a sleeveless style in a blend of 80% cashmere and 20% spandex, with Breton-style stripes and ribbing at the neck, waist, and armholes. Thanks for this ID to Middleton Maven.

The Princess wore a skirt that I initially thought was the Christopher Kane style seen at Wimbledon in 2023, but the waistbands look different in width. So at this point, I would consider it a UFO.

The Princess arrived to watch the netball semi-finals wearing an ensemble which might provide inspiration for anyone looking to master a smart-casual look this summer. The hero piece of the outfit was a new double-breasted blazer, the Camden cashmere design from Ralph Lauren Collection. According to the brand’s website, the jacket “debuted as a men’s sporting style in 19th-century Britain” and “is one of Ralph Lauren’s enduring silhouettes”. Notably, Ralph Lauren is the official outfitter of the Wimbledon Championships, where the Princess is royal patron.

Another key element of the Princess’s outfit was a striped top, a design that she has become synonymous with ever since joining the Royal family. Catherine, who is known as the Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, has worn Breton tops for polo matches and relaxed family engagements as well as in difficult moments, such as the video she released telling the world she had cancer in 2023. The design also reflects the sporty Hamptons aesthetic of Ralph Lauren.

She repeated her Anya Hindmarch Neeson Small Square Tote in ‘chalk’ leather.

And her Camilla Elphick ‘Lucia’ Tan Slingback Pumps.
The Princess brought back her Daniella Draper Gold Trio Star Necklace ($1050), a design first noted when worn during an episode of “The Good, The Bad, and The Rugby” podcast airing in the run-up to the 2023 Rugby World Cup. The necklace is crafted of recycled silver and yellow gold, measuring 17″ in length.

She repeated a Halcyon Days May Torque Bangle Bracelet, possibly the diamond colorway, and also wore her Kiki McDonough hoops with her Annoushka Pearl Drops.

Kate Middleton Styled suggests Princess Charlotte wore the Guess Big Girl Chiffon Short Sleeve Dress, and I think she is correct. Both boys were in Ralph Lauren shirts; Prince Louis looked like he could have been wearing this linen style, and Prince George may have been in this shirt.
